Last weekend I was in Manchester visiting the superb new re-development of the Whitworth Gallery. I was very impressed by a work by Mary Kelly and Ray Barrie called Love Songs: Multi Story House. “The work is a shed in the centre of the room and each panel has words cut out and it is lit from within. The words are not however the lyrics of love songs as the name would suggest but it addresses the relationship of women today with their feminist ‘mothers’ of the 70s. The illuminated Multi-story House (2007) invites us in to read extracts from conversations with women of different generations about feminism.”
